About
Political Awareness & Involvement
“You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.”
-Soror Shirley Chisholm-
From participating in the Women’s Suffrage March & Movement in March 1913, weeks after it was founded, until now, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has been at the forefront of social action. Collectively and individually, members have been architects of the political and historical landscapes of their respective communities. The impact is worldwide.

Each of Delta’s programmatic initiatives has an advocacy component that is implemented under the auspices of Social Action/Political Awareness and Involvement when it is appropriate or necessary to do so. Under the guidance of the National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continues to institute activities focused on enacting laws and polices to sustain and expand the rights and privileges of citizenship to all people and to protect the most vulnerable amongst us. These activities include:

· Active engagement in the legislative, executive, judicial and regulatory affairs of the nation
· Promoting enlightened citizenship by providing fact-based information to elected officials and voters
· Research and advocacy of critical issues
· Monitoring legislation at national, state, and local levels
· Voter registration, education, and mobilization
· Educating the public on public policy issues
· Encourage Deltas to run for elected office

This legacy is sustained by the Greenwood-Itta Bena Alumnae Chapter through programs designed to promote justice and equity in every aspect of life and culture. At the foundation of our engagement are Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital, Delta Days at the United Nations, and Delta Days at the Capitol (Jackson, MS). Our service area initiatives include voter registration campaigns, voter education/awareness forums, voter mobilization drives and political involvement as policy advocates, public officials and candidates for political office.
